2014 Best Screenplay Oscar Contenders
This year's field of originals and adaptations is incredibly dense
"Enough Said" - Nicole Holofcener (Original Screenplay)
Pros: Holofcener's last film, "Please Give," wound up receiving a surprise Writers' Guild nomination in this category, which suggests she was at least on the Academy's radar. She might have moved a little further into view with this wry, grown-up romantic comedy, which has proven popular with critics and audiences -- and features just the kind of barbed, articulate, character-driven writing this branch often likes to single out.
Cons: The film hasn't gained much traction in other categories, and a number of other acclaimed indies are vying for what one might call the "writers' cause" slot. Will it be deemed too televisual for serious consideration?
