2013 Best Picture Oscar Contenders
This year's top candidates from 'A' for 'Argo' to 'Z' for 'Zero Dark Thirty'
'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel'
Pro: Obviously, the drama about a group of British retirees heading to India to live out their golden years is aimed directly at the Academy’s demo. Besides early word members are already big fans of the drama, Searchlight can campaign it as one of the year’s biggest indie hits ($131.4 million worldwide). It also features a potential best supporting actress winner in Maggie Smith.
Con: Is “Exotic” too slight to make the final eight, nine or 10 nominees? The picture received good, but not great reviews (62 on Metacritic, 77% on Rotten Tomatoes). It seems a reach to even make the top 30 of many critic’s top 10 lists which usually means its a major reach for a nomination.
