Pro: Michael Haneke's Palme d'Or winner keeps accumulating critical superlatives, while its moving account of love enduring the indignities of dementia should hit home with older voters – and that's most the Academy. Sony Pictures Classics will be pushing hard.

Con: It's 12 years since a foreign language film not directed by Clint Eastwood made the cut; it's already a heavy favorite in the Best Foreign Language Film race, and voters may feel that's enough. And it may be Haneke's most accessible film, but it's still strong medicine by Academy standards.
