2013 Best Animated Feature Film Contenders
From 'Brave' to 'Zarafa'
Director: Kyle Balda, Chris Renaud
Distributor: Universal Pictures
The Lowdown: From Illumination Entertainment ("Despicable Me") comes a Dr. Seuss adaptation about consumerism and environmentalism. It's beautifully animated, but for what could have been a meaningful entry, it really just has all the sheen of the corporatism it admonishes. And the critics seemed to feel the same, by and large. "Despicable Me" didn't make it to the dance and it's safe to assume this one won't, either. But Illumination nevertheless seems to be close to the mark, duking it out with other companies like Blue Sky Studios and Aardman Animations for recognition in the animated feature race each year. Perhaps some day they'll finally get there.
