2013 Best Animated Feature Film Contenders
From 'Brave' to 'Zarafa'
"From Up on Poppy Hill"
Director: Goro Miyazaki
The Lowdown: Studio Ghibli's "The Secret World of Arrietty" is not eligible this year due to a 2010 release in Japan, leaving Gor? Miyazaki's "From Up on Poppy Hill" to represent the respected animation house. The son of legend-in-the-field Hayao Miyazaki, Gor? has had some big shoes to fill. His debut, "Tales from Earthsea," was not eligible a few years ago, so this is his first real crack at the category. But despite indie champs GKIDS being on board, the film -- however delightful on its own terms -- doesn't sport the vibrant and wondrous imagination of the only two Ghibli films to resonate with the branch to date: "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle." So my hunch is this one will remain on the outskirts, particularly with GKIDS sporting a couple of other more creative and memorable contenders themselves.
