Best New Artist

Nominees:

Fun. feat. Janelle Monae, "We Are Young"
Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe" (pictured)
Frank Ocean, "Swim Good"
One Direction, "What Makes You Beautiful"
The Wanted, "Glad You Came"

Frank Ocean’s atmospheric story clip for “Swim Good” is the most artful. One Direction and The Wanted’s clips are basically performance clips with the beach and pretty girls breaking up the action. Similarly, Fun.’s video features performance footage amid a riotous audience. They all totally serve their purpose of putting a face to the name, which is vital when introducing new acts. Carly Rae Jepsen’s video for “Call Me Maybe” delightfully accomplishes both: we get a real feel for her as an artist as she performs in her garage, but it blends with an adorable, funny story with a twist that elevated the clip and song to pop culture hit of the summer. It should win unless the 1D fans go into voting overdrive.

Should Win: Frank Ocean, “Swim Good”

Will Win: Carly Rae Jepsen, “Call Me Maybe”
