Your defending champions in the drama and comedy series categories are, once again, the nominated shows as well, with 17 and 14 nominations respectively. Both shows have to be considered prohibitive favorites going into September. For the second straight year, "Modern Family" received nominations for all six adult members of its cast. And, once again, "Mad Men" received nominations for Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks (with Jared Harris as a minor surprise). Want signs of hope if you're competing against these two juggernauts? Well, "Mad Men" couldn't get a nomination for Jessica Pare and John Slattery fell out of the field (BOO!!!), while "Modern Family" hasn't found a way to get its younger stars a slice of the Emmy pie. So... There's that?
