20 notoriously troubled movie sets
'Dancer in the Dark' (2000)
Notable participants: Lars von Trier, Björk
What happened: In her first (and, to date, only) major acting role, Icelandic superstar Bjork hooked up with Danish "Breaking the Waves" auteur Lars von Trier to film this idiosyncratic musical, which won the coveted Palme d'Or at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival (Bjork also took home Best Actress). Needless to say, the eccentric director and his equally-eccentric lead star were far from simpatico during production, engaging in frequent disagreements that came to a head when the latter literally fled the set and disappeared for four days. While von Trier would later chalk up the contentious nature of the shoot to the pair's respective control-freak tendencies, Bjork subsequently published a blog post stating that the critically-acclaimed director "...needs a female to provide his work soul. And he envies them and hates them for it. So he has to destroy them during the filming. And hide the evidence." Ouch.
