Dick Tracy (1990)
Why it got the green light: With its appealing detective hero and colorful villains including Big Boy, Mumbles and Flattop, "Dick Tracy" seemed destined to be the next successful comic strip/book adaptation, particularly following the success of the first "Batman" in 1989.
Why a franchise never materialized: While it made more than $100 million domestically and over $160 million worldwide on a reported $46 million budget, the film's grosses didn't live up to Disney's expectations, particularly when taking into account the studio's enormous marketing push. Any hopes for a sequel were dashed after director/star Beatty became embroiled in a prolonged legal dispute with "Dick Tracy" publisher Tribune Media Services. - CE
