15 unexpected summer movie hits
Plus: 'Bring it On,' 'The Karate Kid,' 'Babe' and more
Release Date: August 4, 1995
Box Office: $63.7 million
Why: "Mad Max" mastermind George Miller was so obsessed with bringing award-winning children's book "The Sheep-Pig" to the screen he spent 10 years laboring as a producer on the project. It turned out to be well worth the wait as the irresistible Australian film (directed by Chris Noonan) starring an almost all-animal cast (and James Cromwell as Farmer Hoggett) became a worldwide word of mouth sensation. "Babe" parlayed its sleeper hit status all the way to the Oscars, scoring an underdog nom for Best Picture and a well-deserved victory for Best Visual Effects. That'll do, indeed.
