16 of the most unnecessary sequels ever made
Does 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2' fit the bill?
'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer' (1998)
Sequel to: "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (1997)
Did it kill the franchise: Almost.
Why it was so unnecessary: With "Scream," Kevin Williamson revived (and reimagined) the teen horror movie as a little smarter, a little more self-aware, and a little funnier than the slasher pics of years past. "I Know What You Did Last Summer," also from Williamson, lacked "Scream"'s wit but was still passably scary. Williamson decided not to take on "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," (as did stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe) and it was the right decision. A return to standard horror fare, the victims make dumb decisions, the killer is obvious and the scares are utterly predictable. While a straight-to-video sequel called "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" was released in 2006, this series is as dead as a horror franchise gets. Considering the downhill spiral, let's hope it stays dead.
