15 of the most unnecessary sequels ever made
Does 'Grown Ups 2' fit the bill?
'Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd' (2003)
Sequel to: "Dumb and Dumber" (1994)
Did it kill the franchise: For a time. (see below)
Why it was so unnecessary: New Line wanted sequels to its Jim Carrey properties -- "The Mask" and "Dumb and Dumber" -- badly throughout the late-90s. Finally, after failing to entice the box office magnet to suit up for more, the studio just opted for prequels with cheaper actors hinged on the appeal of the brands. And the desperation was certainly showing. The film couldn't even manage $40 million worldwide as audiences seemed wise to their game, or more likely, they just weren't interested without Carrey and co-star Jeff Daniels. Cut to 2013 and Universal has picked up a sequel that Warner Bros. didn't want to produce and we're going to get "Dumb and Dumber To" (another nifty title) with Carrey and Daniels on board. One assumes they'd rather you forget this little blip in the franchise.
