16 of the most unnecessary sequels ever made
Does 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2' fit the bill?
'Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2' (2000)
Sequel to: "The Blair Witch Project" (1999)
Did it kill the franchise: Yes.
Why it was so unnecessary: Where to begin? It's silly to try and capture lightning in a bottle a second time, and that's precisely what "The Blair Witch Project" was. But I guess you can understand why someone would give it a shot. The original film ended up costing about $100,000 (which Artisan then injected with about half a million of its own money to soup it up after buying the film at Sundance). It ended up grossing nearly $250 million worldwide. That's a hell of a profit, but by the time you get to a truly dreadful sequel (directed by Joe Berlinger, whose work on the "Paradise Lost" trilogy is beyond reproach, it should be noted), the tank had run quite a bit dry, certainly for the many who felt burned by the original film's frenzy of hype that didn't really pay off so well in the theater.
