16 of the most unnecessary sequels ever made
Does 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2' fit the bill?
"Jaws: The Revenge" (1987)
Sequel to: "Jaws" (1975), "Jaws 2" (1978) and "Jaws 3-D" (1983)
Did it kill the franchise: Yes.
Why it was so unnecessary: Few quotes sum up the unnecessary sequel more perfectly than the observation of Michael Caine regarding "Jaws 4." Caine famously quipped, "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific!" In addition to houses, the movie also earned a working vacation in the Bahamas for actors including Mario Van Peebles and original "Jaws" co-star Lorraine Gary. Actually, the film's legacy is probably the tag line "This time it's personal," which has become subject to endless parody and mockery. However, mockery aside, "Jaws 4" took in earned nearly $52 million worldwide, hardly a disaster relative to its budget.
