The Last Wave (1977)
Peter Weir's trippy, philosophically dazzling take on The End of the World probably requires some awareness of Aboriginal/Western relations in 1970s Australia, but not so much that you can't get sucked into its world of premonitions, Dreamtime and tribal superstition. As an Aussie Legal Aid attorney brought in to represent four Aboriginals accused of murder, Richard Chamberlain gives the finest performance of his career, while this is one of several terrific '70s performances by Aboriginal actor David Gulpilil. An existential thriller with an apocalyptic twist and more people should probably see this 1977 release.
