12 Monkeys (1995)
Terry Gilliam's Sci-Fi thriller begins in a post-apocalyptic future, where the population has been decimated by a virus forcing everyone to live underground. A group of scientists send a convicted criminal, Cole (Bruce Willis), back in time to bring back a sample of the original virus so a cure can be found. Initially, Cole is supposed to be sent back to 1996, immediately before the outbreak occurred, but instead finds himself pushed all the way back to 1990. The scenario turns out to be a loop - Cole's destiny was to return back in time to become part of the series of events that leads to the outbreak of the virus. Can he stop it? The film's strength is that it plays with the audience's belief in what is really happening or what is a hallucination in Cole's mind (or not) on the inevitability of events. Sometimes no matter what you do, you just can't change the past.
