15 awards season hopefuls looking for distribution
These currently homeless films could find room if picked up
Director: Kelly Reichardt
Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning, Peter Sarsgaard
Festival(s): Venice, Toronto
Why it's on our radar: Kelly Reichardt's last two features, the Michelle Williams starrers “Wendy and Lucy” and “Meek's Cutoff,” firmly established her as a critics' darling, but were too small and mood-driven to gather any awards traction outside the Indie Spirit/Gotham realm. But her latest, which follows in the footsteps of “Cutoff” by premiering in Competition at Venice, could be a moderately more mainstream venture. Dakota Fanning, Peter Sarsgaard and Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg star as a trio of radical environmental activists grappling with the moral implications of their eco-terrorism as they plot to blow up a dam. Sounds like a potential double-bill partner for Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij's thriller “The East,” though with Reichardt at the helm, one should expect something more measured.
