15 awards season hopefuls looking for distribution
These currently homeless films could find room if picked up
Director: Paul Haggis
Stars: Mila Kunis, James Franco, Olivia Wilde, Liam Neeson
Why it's on our radar: Paul Haggis's Oscar stock has fallen a bit since he racked up five nominations (and, of course, that surprise Best Picture win for “Crash”) between 2004 and 2006; “In the Valley of Elah” scored only for Tommy Lee Jones, and 2010's “The Next Three Days” sank without trace. Still, his purple patch is still sufficiently recent, and his latest effort sufficiently starry, that it merits consideration – though the vague logline (“interrelated stories of three couples in three cities, Rome, New York and Paris—each with its own secrets”) has shades of 2011's shuddersome “360.” (Also, do the secrets belong to the couples, the cities or both?) That it's listed as a wholly Belgian production suggests Hollywood may have lost confidence in Haggis's trademark structural trickery, but have distributors? We'll see.
