Clint Eastwood

Sure, he starred in numerous films for legends like Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, but given his squinty-eyed, stoic Man With No Name persona in a string of classic Westerns dating from the 1960s, it's doubtful anyone back then envisioned the Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood would eventually become. And yet he did, winning Oscars for both "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby" and being nominated for several more, in a career that has seen him demonstrate a prowess for all types of films - from thrillers ("Play Misty for Me") to action movies ("The Gauntlet") to war films ("Letters from Iwo Jima") to dramas ("Mystic River") to, yes, Westerns. You know what they say - never underestimate the quiet ones.
