Why it's great: Great horror films should be hard to watch. If you finish a horror movie and you're all smiles, something has gone wrong. I would imagine very few people walked out of "The Mist" smiling, and it's a great case of someone adapting a piece of work, keeping everything that made the original work, and elevating it through a few key choices. Frank Darabont's passion for Stephen King's original story comes through loud and clear, and while some of the tropes they use (survivors coming undone in close proximity, religious fanaticism as a danger) are familiar ones, the cast really hums, and the film builds to one of the great ugly sucker punches in recent cinema. If you want to see this the right way, watch it on Blu-ray and only watch the black-and-white version. It's the greatest '50s monster movie never made.
