Why it's great: Steeped in existential dread, writer/director Kiyoshi Kurosawa's terrifying 2001 techno-horror flick starts as a fairly conventional supernatural thriller before evolving into an unnerving meditation on the ways in which modern technology tends to isolate us rather than bring us together. Filmed in chilly, muted colors and with very little in the way of special effects, "Pulse" (later dumbed-down for the inevitable American remake) verges on the surreal in its final scenes, lingering like a particularly distressing nightmare long after the end credits have rolled.
