Why it's great: We vote on these lists, and I frequently will include things on my own personal list that I know will never make it onto the final, simply because I have to be honest about whatever the topic is. In this case, I never suspected this many other people would also have been as strongly affected as I was by this. Struggling with the guilt and grift that came from the death of their child, a couple (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe) retreat to a cabin to try to work through their issues. The husband is a therapist, and he's convinced he can heal his wife, who seems broken by what happened. It's safe to say things spiral out of control and, indeed, chaos reigns. I can think of no more terrifying portrait of the hellscape of a bad marriage, and when the film finally decides to hurt the audience, it goes further than anyone would expect. Beautifully crafted by Lars Von Trier, this is the best horror film about being married since "The Shining," and has the genuine stink of crazy on it.
