Why it's underrated: Joe Johnston's old-fashioned action-adventure film (based on the comic-book character created by Dave Stevens) scored some decent reviews but failed to woo audiences, leading Disney to scrap their sequel plans for the film (it was originally intended as a trilogy). Nevertheless, "The Rocketeer" is a refreshingly non-ironic homage to the old film serials of the 1930s and '40s that also functions as an effective and spirited action-adventure film in its own right. Some of the effects are dated now, but the genuine care and sense of enthusiasm with which it was made is evident in every frame.
