“Twenty Feet from Stardom”

In theaters: June 14
Why it should be on your radar: Last year, Sundance opened with “Searching for Sugar Man,” a heartwarming music-themed doc that charmed audiences, went on to be a crossover smash and won the Oscar. This year, Sundance opened with “Twenty Feet from Stardom,” a heartwarming music-themed doc that charmed audiences ... and, well, we'll see. So far, however, almost everyone who watches this tribute to backing vocalists, the ones who have stood too long in the shadows of soul music, seems to fall under its spell; Greg was thoroughly bewitched at Sundance, calling it "spectacular" and noting that it "accomplishes the rare feet of entertaining as it educates." Moreover, if you're a fan of the golden age of 1960s soul music – and honestly, who isn't? – this promises to be an unmissable counterpart to the less melodic summer-movie noise.
