Why it should be on your radar: I may be dating myself rather badly with this question, but do kids still read Judy Blume? I don't know, but they should. Arguably the most influential name in young adult fiction, Blume's forthright work redefined how teenagers could be depicted in American popular culture, yet strangely, the film industry has never served her that well. Until now, hopefully. It's taken her own son to bring one of her most popular and controversial novels to screen: Willa Holland (“The OC,” “Gossip Girl”) stars as a teenager processing the murder of her father, and coming of age in the process. Early festival reactions suggest Blume has done justice to his mom's classic; it was named Best Film at the Palm Beach fest last year. It could be smart counter-programming for teens who read more than just their text messages.
