Director: James Marsh
Stars: Andrea Riseborough, Clive Owen, Domnhall Gleeson
In theaters: May 17
Why it should be on your radar: Marsh may be better known for his documentary work – he won an Oscar for “Man on Wire” a few years back – but this riveting IRA thriller, which has taken a while to reach US screens after its Sundance 2012 debut, proved that his exacting eye and investigative instincts can serve him just as well in narrative filmmaking. Andrea Riseborough, currently being seen opposite Tom Cruise in “Oblivion,” justifies the Next Big Thing hype with a startling performance as an Irish single mother whose life is put on the line when she turns from terrorist to government informant, and falls for her minder (Owen) on the right side of the law. It has already won Riseborough a host of awards in her home country, and merits a Best Actress Oscar campaign.
