10 Superman arcs to prepare you for 'Man of Steel'
Which stories inspired Zack Snyder's film?
"The World of Krypton" (1987)
Continuing with John Byrne, the writer's somewhat toned-down take on the Man of Steel was a direct influence on the new film, and Goyer has in fact explicitly stated that his vision of Krypton took cues from this volume. The 1987 four-part series "The World of Krypton" (not to be confused with the pre-Crisis story "World of Krypton") told of Kal-El's homeworld in the lead-up to its destruction and that tiny rocket ship that would escape the clutches of its armageddon. It revealed a sterile, isolationist society emotionally dead in the wake of 1,000 years of war. Physical procreation being a thing of the past, genetic advance and cloning have significantly shaped how Kryptonians reproduce. But the decadent society is racing rapidly toward its demise.
