A big-budget remake of the 1976 sci-fi drama "Logan's Run" has been in the works for some time, and it recently seemed to be finally moving forward with Ryan Gosling reuniting with his "Drive" director Nicolas Winding Refn.

Now, however, it appears that the film's time is once again running out, as Variety has reported that Gosling has dropped out. 

1976's "Logan's Run," based on a 1967 novel, is about a hedonistic future society where no one is allowed to live past 30 (in the book, the maximum age is 21). In the original film, Michael York plays Logan, a "Sandman" who hunts down and kills those who rebel against the strict laws, until he himself goes on the run. 

Gosling is 31, so perhaps his exit is fitting.

The remake has been bouncing around Warner Bros. since the mid-'90s, with various directors such as Skip Woods and Joseph Kosinski attached. Bryan Singer ("X-Men") came closest to getting the film made in the mid-2000s, until scheduling conflicts halted development. 

Refn joined the film in the summer of 2011, with Gosling and Rose Byrne slated to play the lead roles. There's no word yet if the director and Byrne will continue with a different male lead.

Meanwhile, Gosling will soon be seen opposite Sean Penn and Emma Stone in the delayed "Gangster Squad."
