'Star Trek 2's' Benedict Cumberbatch to play Beatles manager Brian Epstein

"Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch will meet The Beatles in an upcoming film.

The British actor will star in a biopic of the Fab Four's former manager Brian Epstein, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Paul McGuigan, who has directed the majority of "Sherlock" episodes as well as features such as "Lucky Number Slevin" and "Push," will helm the as-yet-untitled film.

Todd Graff ("The Vanishing") wrote the screenplay about the so-called "Fifth Beatle" Epstein, who signed The Beatles in 1961, guided them through their early recordings and helped spark Beatlemania. A closeted homosexual who suffered from addiction to drugs and gambling, Epstein died in 1967 from an accidental overdose.

Playtone's Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce the film along with Simon Halfon.

The film will compete with another Brian Epstein-centric film project called "The Fifth Beatle" from author Vivek J. Tiwary, and has the rights to the Beatles song catalogue.

Cumberbatch recently co-starred in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (pictured) and will soon be seen in "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and as an unspecified villain in J.J. Abrams' highly-anticipated "Star Trek Into Darkness."
