10 questions Hollywood can't stop talking about
From 'Star Wars' to Melissa McCarthy to 'Open Road'
Is Melissa McCarthy a real box office superstar?
Melissa McCarthy is proving she's not just a flash in the pan. The former best supporting actress nominee returned to the screen opposite Jason Bateman last month in the buddy comedy "Identity Thief." It was her first leading role since the megahit success of "Bridesmaids." Shockingly, with terrible reviews (35 on Metacritic, 22% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a B Cinemascore from audiences, the R-rated "Thief" still grossed 3 1/2 times its opening weekend for $131 million to date. You can absolutely chalk that up to the appeal of McCarthy and some smart marketing, but if her next comedy, "The Heat" alongside Sandra Bullock, hits? She just won't be a hot commodity, she'll be Hollywood's equivalent of a supernova.
