10 questions Hollywood can't stop talking about
From 'Star Wars' to Melissa McCarthy to 'Open Road'
Are 'Hangover, Pt. III' and 'Fast Six' cannibalizing themselves Memorial Day weekend?
It's been quite awhile since two major releases both opened on Memorial Day weekend. Traditionally, studios scare each other off the date by placing an expected blockbuster on the schedule before one of their competitors can claim it first. In fact, 20th Century Fox already has "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" set for the same weekend in 2014 (strangely 2015 is unclaimed at the moment, but the next "Star Wars" movie is a good bet). This year, Universal and Warner Bros. are pitting two anticipated releases "The Hangover, Pt. III" and "Fast Six" against each other in the hopes neither will eat into the other's audiences. "Hangover 3" will have the disadvantage of being rated R, but follows the second installment's $85 million debut over the 2011 Memorial Day frame. "Fast Six" follows an $86 million opening for "Fast Five" in April of 2011. Will moviegoers make time for both films over the holiday, will one picture dominate the other or will each movie's box office suffer because of the opening competition? Needless to say, all of the other studios in Hollywood can't wait to see how it all turns out.
