Elle Fanning - 'Ginger & Rosa'

Is 14 too tender an age to be declared a great actor? Elle Fanning's résumé to date suggests it might not be. For the last two years, she's deserved awards attention that didn't come for intuitive, emotionally acute work in “Somewhere” and “Super 8,” but tops even those calling cards with her first fully-fledged lead in Sally Potter's lovely, under-appreciated “Ginger and Rosa.” Nailing the maddening psychological ricochets (not to mention the brittle English accent) of a neglected, precociously radicalized teenager in 1960s London, it's a performance that recalls, and even exceeds, Carey Mulligan's more lavishly garlanded ingenue breakthrough in “An Education.” Fanning's day cannot be far off. - Guy Lodge
