10 notable sequels that took their sweet time
Which of these belated follow-ups were worth the wait?
'Escape from L.A.' (1996)
Sequel to: 1981's "Escape from New York"
Years between films: 15
Why it doesn't work: After "New York" became a breakout hit and pop culture touchstone (and Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken became an antihero for the ages), a sequel seemed like a logical step. The fact the project was in development for over a decade is a pretty strong hint it wasn't such a good idea after all. With more money (the budget jumped from "New York"'s $6 million to $50 million), cheesy action scenes overpowered the story, the camp of the first film was turned up to eleven, and the storyline was essentially a remake of the original, but set on the West Coast. Fans were disappointed, only because they knew that after so many years, this sequel should (and could) have been so much more.
