10 notable sequels that took their sweet time
Which of these belated follow-ups were worth the wait?
'Rocky Balboa' (2006)
Sequel to: 1990's "Rocky V"
Years between films: 16
Why it works: Say what you want about "Rocky IV," it had good moments. "Rocky V" though was just downright bad. After the beating that film received, it took 16 years for Sly to step back into the ring as The Italian Stallion in "Rocky Balboa," and the wait was worth it. He wasn't just playing the guy we saw at the end of "Rocky V," he gave us a realistic update to the Balboa we saw in the original movie. There were certainly some ridiculous moments in "Balboa," but the film, like Rocky himself, had heart where "Rocky V" was a lifeless lump. "Rocky Balboa" did what "Rocky V" wanted to do, it took the hero back to his roots and showed who this guy was after all the fame and fortune had left him. Try watching "Rocky" and "Rocky Balboa" back to back and tell us that it's not a great way to bookend the franchise.
