10 notable sequels that took their sweet time
Which of these belated follow-ups were worth the wait?
'Before Sunset' (2004)
Sequel to: 1995's "Before Sunrise"
Years between films: 9
Why it works: The open-ended conclusion to "Before Sunrise" was a beautiful thing, launching nearly a decade of romantic conversations and debates between couples that discovered the movie together. Why would anybody want to put that in jeopardy? Well, it turns out that Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy has more to say about maturity and love and opportunities lost and regained. "Before Sunset" capitalizes on the actors' own maturation and some magnificent Parisian settings to deliver a near-perfect 80 minutes of developing and unfolding love that surpasses the original. And then, nine years later, Linklater and Hawke and Delpy were back at it again and they nailed it again with "Before Midnight." May we get many more installments in this most unlikely of movie franchises.
