10 notable sequels that took their sweet time
Which of these belated follow-ups were worth the wait?
Sequel to: 1988's "Rambo III"
Years between films: 20
Why it sort of works: With Cold War nationalism long since replaced with post-9/11 paranoia, Rambo seemed more irrelevant than ever by 2008, and an aging Sylvester Stallone wisely let the belated fourth film reflect that fact. Stallone-as-Rambo begins the film in isolated, lonely "retirement" before Stallone-the-director cranks the blood-soaked violence up to 11 in a way that's even more gory, brutal and one-sided than its predecessors. In a way, the carnage is a better fit with the character's righteous absolutism than the glossy, explosion-heavy studio violence of the superior second and third installments.
