'The Neighbors'

"The Neighbors" (ABC)
Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.

Why we're worried: The premise — ordinary family (led by Lenny Venito and Jami Gertz) moves into a New Jersey gated community where all the neighbors are aliens — sounds like a bad parody of early '80s sitcoms. The trailer bombed at ABC's upfront presentation, leading everyone to wonder why they network would devote the coveted post-"Modern Family" timeslot to this.
Why it could still end up OK: Comedies don't always work well in trailer form, particularly high-concept ones like this. Creator Dan Fogelman has been involved in some good movies ("Crazy, Stupid, Love," "Tangled"), and Venito and Gertz are both gifted comic actors.
