10 New Shows We're Worried About After Upfronts 2012
'Elementary,' 'The Neighbors' and 'Mob Doctor' are among the shows that have us on edge
'The Mob Doctor'
"The Mob Doctor" (FOX)
Mondays at 9 p.m.
Why we're worried: Fox is trying a two-birds-one-stone trick here: Find a new medical drama to fill the "House"-sized hole in the schedule, and make it clearly compatible with female-skewing lead-in "Bones." There's nothing wrong with either goal, but the blandly titled "Mob Doctor" also seems to be aiming for more than just personality-driven procedural entertainment. If we're actually supposed to take either the medical or crime drama elements of this hybrid seriously, the underwhelming promo and lightweight casting choices do nothing to convince us that's going to work.
Why it could still end up OK: The track record of ambitious Fox dramas doesn't exactly bode well. "Mob Doctor" creator Josh Berman himself stumbled with "Vanished" (remember that?) and the procedural "Killer Instinct" (I won't even ask...). But you've gotta admire them for trying. Plus, "Mob Doctor" has a "Friday Night Lights" connection in co-star Zach Gilford, and we always wish him well. Or a better series if this one doesn't last.
