District 9 (2009)
Neil Blomkamp's acclaimed film debut posits a world in which ailing aliens landed on Earth on 1982, only to be rounded up and placed into South African slums where they co-exist uneasily with their human overlords. The film's mockumentary style lends a realist touch to the thinly-veiled allegory on Apartheid, in which animosity between the oppressed "Prawns" and some greedy humans eventually boils over into bloody confrontation.
