Dick (1999)
Though it received generally positive reviews, this comedy gem was unfortunately overlooked by audiences on release. Nevertheless, "The Craft" director Andrew Fleming again showed his adeptness at pulling memorable performances out of his young actresses here, with both Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams winning as a pair of bubbleheaded 15-year-old girls who inadvertently become embroiled in the Watergate scandal. Supporting players - including Dan Hedaya as Nixon and Will Ferrell as scandal-breaker Bob Woodward - keep the farce humming, and the insertion of the ditzy teenage heroines as unknowing participants in some of the major historical events of the day is done in surprisingly clever fashion throughout. A great rental for fans of effervescent teen comedies with a smarter-than-average sensibility.
