10 horror movie remakes done right
'The Teas Chainsaw Massacre' (2003)
This updating of the Tobe Hooper horror classic isn't even on the same playing field as its 1974 predecessor, but it succeeds very well on the terms it sets down: to give audiences a viscerally-terrifying night out at the movies. Unlike Hooper, remake-prone director Marcus Nispel ("Friday the 13th," "Conan the Barbarian") is a straightforward craftsman rather than an artist, but he does a brutally efficient job of ramping up the intensity (not to mention the gore) as he puts his attractive cast - led by Justin Timberlake's now-wife Jessica Biel - through the proverbial ringer. As opposed to most of the films spawned from the unrelenting remake craze it inspired, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" delivers on its blood-soaked promise in spades.
