10 horror movie remakes done right
'Dawn of the Dead' (2004)
Perhaps best remembered for swapping out George Romero's sloth-like zombies for the full-speed-ahead variety, Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" is more of a straightforward horror film than the 1978 original, largely ditching the satire for sequences of breakneck action and delirious gore that distract nicely from the film's lack of subtext. While it may not be as smart, the strength of Snyder's remake is that, by taking a wholly different aesthetic approach to the same raw material, it distinguishes itself as an entirely separate entity that can be enjoyed on its own terms rather than those of its predecessor. A game cast led by the always-compelling Sarah Polley and a biting sense of humor complete a highly enjoyable package.
