'The Thing' (1982)
John Carpenter was at the top of his game when he updated Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks' 1951 sci-fi thriller "The Thing from Another World" into this now-classic 1982 fright flick, which boasted groundbreaking practical effects work by Rob Bottin and a stellar ensemble cast led by his "Escape from New York" star Kurt Russell. The atmosphere of dread and paranoia sustained by Carpenter here is balanced out by his frequent forays into sequences of gory violence, made all the more memorable by Bottin's jaw-dropping creature effects - just as impressive as they were at the time of the movie's release. Most responsible for the film's timeless appeal is the way it manages to get under your skin, remaining with you long after its haunting final scene has faded to black.
