"Critical Film Studies" (Season 2, episode 19)
What seemed in the advanced publicity like it was going to be an extended "Pulp Fiction" homage instead turned into a stealth tribute to "My Dinner with Andre," as Abed decides the greatest birthday present he could get would be to live out the 1981 cult film classic in which two old friends have a series of deep and meaningful conversations over a meal. Abed's Asperger's means he can only fake intimacy like this through the filter of pop culture, but Jeff doesn't realize this as Abed delivers a spellbinding monologue about his stint as an extra on "Cougar Town," and in turn inspires a hilarious, tragic story from Jeff's past. A great example of the ways the show dealt with the limitations and possibilities of friendship, as well as the exact kind of episode you can be sure Sony sent to the new guys with a note saying "Don't give us anything like this, please."
