"Community" proved throughout the Harmon run that it could tackle not only any kind of genre parody, but any tone. There would be silly episodes where nothing emotional was at stake, but also darker, more down-to-earth outings like this one, where Troy's 21st birthday turns into a group outing to a local bar — and to Troy's realization that while the rest of the study group may be more grown-up than he is, they're also mostly sadder. A great outing for the whole cast, but particularly for Donald Glover, who showed he can be just as good at playing Troy as human as he was at crying like a little girl.
