'The Dark Knight Rises' theater shooting shocks industry and moviegoers
The tragic shooting at an Aurora, Colorado midnight screening of a "The Dark Night Rises" broke the code of safety the public expected from their local movie theater. Similarly to the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, theater attendance dropped dramatically in many parts of the country and took weeks to recover. Five months later and the industry still hasn't come up with an acceptable solution to make sure it doesn't happen again. Many theaters have increased overall security, but neither studios, theater owners or the public seem interested in airport like safety procedures. Along with the recent school tragedy in Newton, Connecticut, it has led to a call for stricter gun control from a federal level. At the least, theater owners are making sure high profile openings have more security than they did previously.
