After Tim Burton's 2001 misfire that attempted to update the long-running franchise for the 21st century, Fox went back to the drawing board and devised this thrilling prequel in which Caesar (a compelling, mo-capped Andy Serkis) leads an army of rebellious simians against their human oppressors. There's no twist, as in the 1968 original, just a tight script and a sense of gritty realism. - DL
