"Year One" (1987)
Speaking of Miller, his re-imagining of Batman's origins in the post-Crisis "Year One" arc ("Batman" #403-406) was an instant success and a definitive new groundwork for the character. It was tapped liberally for 2005's "Batman Begins," everything from Bruce Wayne's early days patrolling the streets before taking up the guise of a Bat to police antagonism of the Dark Knight (the bomb squad sequence is stripped right from its pages). Most of all, it was clearly an inspiration for Gary Oldman's embodiment James Gordon and his relationship with a vigilante he quickly discovers is a necessity in a town as corrupt as Gotham. Also worth noting: Juno Temple's role in the new film seems to be inspired by the Holly Robinson character.
