"The Dark Knight Returns" (1986)
Ever since it was revealed that the events of "The Dark Knight Rises" take place eight years after those of "The Dark Knight," speculation has turned to Frank Miller's quintessential 1986 effort "The Dark Knight Returns." Set in the future with Bruce Wayne as an old man and the cape and cowl having been retired some time ago, the story was obviously a bit of a touchstone for Nolan's take on similar events in the new film. Further to that, his vision of Bane channels the Mutant Leader antagonist of Miller's tale somewhat. But don't expect any third act brawls with The Boy in Blue or anything (obviously).
