"No Man's Land" (1999)
And finally, Nolan and company first sourced this massive, title-spanning saga about a post-earthquake Gotham in the third act of "Batman Begins" with an incapacitated police force and a sequestered area of the city, and they do so again with "The Dark Knight Rises." In the story, graffiti marks a possible return of an assumed M.I.A. Caped Crusader. It would also seem the snowy setting of the story has become a bit of an inspiration as well. The new film takes a lot of this atmosphere and blends it in its own Dark Knight soup, like much of the rest of the series has done with other arcs and narratives. Again, compositing has been a key to representing as wide a spectrum of the mythology as possible. In a thankless job like adapting a beloved comic book character, it's really the only way to go.
